Metabolic alkalosis Flashcards
1
Q
What is metabolic alkalosis caused by?
A
Raise in plasma bicarbonate levels
2
Q
How does hypokalaemia cause metabolic alkalosis?
A
- Hypokalemia
- K + shift cells to ECF via H+/K+
- Low H+ in ECF
- Metabolic alkalosis
3
Q
How does vomitting/diuretics cause metabolic alkalosi?
A
- Na+ and Cl- loss
- Activation of RAAS due to low Na+
- Aldosterone release causes Na+ reabsorbtion in exchange for H+
- Low H+ excreted
- Metabolic alkalosis

- Hypokalaemia
- Primary aldosteronism
- Cushing’s syndrome
- Congenital adrenal hyperplasia
