Metabolic Flashcards
1
Q
What are 3 examples of metabolic brain pathologies?
A
- hepatic encephalopathy
- thiamine deficiency
- uraemic seizures
2
Q
How does hepatic encephalopathy present?
A
- altered mentation or generalised forebrain signs such as seizures
3
Q
Cause of hepatic encephalopathy
A
- secondary to congenital or acquired portosystemic shunting
4
Q
Diagnosis of hepatic encephalopathy
A
- dynamic bile acid testing
- ammonia is useful but can be tricky and unreliable
5
Q
Fill in the gaps: all animals less than xx months of age which present with xx should be screened for HE secondary to congenital xx xx
A
- All animals less than 12m/o which present with seizures should be screened for HE secondary to congenital portosystemic shunting
– they rarely present with seizures related to feeding
6
Q
Cause of thiamine deficiency
A
- cats on raw fish diets
7
Q
Signs of thiamine deficiency
A
- generalised changes in the brain, so present with progressive forebrain or vestibular signs
8
Q
Prevalence of thiamine deficiency
A
- very rare in dogs and cats on a reputable commercial diet
9
Q
Uraemic seizures
A
- seizures can occur in animals with severe uraemia, however will be showing other signs indicative of severe renal compromise
