what is a metaphor?
is a phrase or sentence in which the author creates an image in the readers mind.
what are the key words to use for a metaphor?
was and were, PAST TENSE.
what is a simile?
a simile is a phrase or sentence that compares an object or person with something else, to make a description more relatable.
what are some examples of similes?
as brave as a lion, as fast as lighting, as sharp as a pencil etc
what is personification?
personification usually involves an author describing a non-living object with verbs and makes it seem like it is a living species or thing.
can you think of some examples of personification?
fresh rain tapped its fingertips on the roof, the trees whispered in the wind and even the walls seem to be listing etc.
what is an oxymoron?
an oxymoron is created but putting together 2 words which don’t usually belong together but create an interesting metal image for the reader.
what are some examples of oxymorons?
there was deafening silence, he was perfectly horrid, and the chocolate cake was awfully tasty etc.
what is onomatopoeia?
onomatopoeia is a common form of figurative language, in which an author creates a sound for the reader by using a word which makes a physically required sound in your head at the time you are reading it.
what are some examples of onomatopoeia?
crash, boo, moo, oink, slap, tap, drip, knock, click, chirp etc.
what is a Hyperbole?
a Hyperbole is a phrase or sentenced which uses exaggeration to emphasise a point. it is often used to make something sound much more dramatic than it really is.
what are some examples of Hyperboles?
I’m so hungry I could eat a horse, this is the worst day of my life and there is enough food in my cupboard to feed an entire army. ETC
what is a idiom?
an idiom is a phrase that, when used as an expression, has a well-known meaning.
what are some examples of an idiom?
this test is going to be as easy as a piece of cake, are you feeling under the weather and to have bitten off more than you can chew. ETC
what is a pun?
a pun is a play on words, used in a humorous manner. puns take advantage of the fact that a word or phrase can have a different meaning, for example two words can sound the same but don’t have the same meaning.
