What is a mesothelioma?
Malignant mesothelioma is a tumour of the mesothelial cells that usually occurs in the pleura, and rarely in the peritoneum or other organs.
What causes mesothelioma?
Mesotheliona is associated with occupational exposure to asbestosis, but the relationship is complex. 90% report previous exposure to asbestos, but only 20% of patients have pulmonary asbestosis. The latent period between exposure and development of the tumour may be up to 45 years.
What are the clinical features of mesothelioma?
- Chest pain
- Dyspnoea
- Weight loss
- Finger clubbing
- Recurrent pleural effusions
How is mesothelioma managed?
Chemotherapy can improve survival. Surgery and Radiotherapy are controversial.
What is the prognosis like with mesothelioma?
Prognosis is poor, especially without chemotherapy (<2 years)
