Mesopotamia location
Between and around the Euphrates and the Tigris rivers, within the fertile crescent
Fertile crescent
Extends to the Nile, Mediterranean, and Persian Gulf, soil sustained early civilizations.
Rivers provided
Rich nutrients (silt) for planting crops, copious amounts of mud for buildings, temples, ziggurats, houses. Helped advance agriculture. water, fishing, transportation → trading.
City-state
A state with political and economical control over the surrounding countryside.
Polytheists
Sumerians believed in many gods.
Theocracy
Government that believes in divine authority.
Held authority besides kings and queens
Priests and priestesses.
Ziggurat
A massive step tower dedicated to the chief goddess or god.
Sumerian advancements
Calendar, 60 number system, geometry to measure fields and erect buildings, sundial, cuneiform, charting constellations, wagon wheel (ability to move large objects,) the arch, bronze - combining copper and tin.
Sumerians
Creators of the first Mesopotamian civilization.
Monotheism
Belief in one god.
