What is mesenteric adenitis?
A
Inflammation of lymph nodes in the abdominal mesentery
- Can mimic appendicitis

Describe the epidemiology of mesenteric adenitis
A
- Mainly affects children and teenagers

What causes mesenteric adenitis?
A
Most common cause is a recent viral intestinal infection (eg. gastroenteritis) → KEY IN HX

What are the presenting symptoms/ signs of mesenteric adenitis?
A
- Abdominal Pain → usually in RLQ, but may be more widespread
- General abdominal tenderness
- Fever
- Mesenteric lymph node enlargement
- May also have Diarrhoea + N&V depending on cause

What investigations are used to diagnose/ monitor mesenteric adenitis?
A
Abdominal Ultrasound
Bloods

How is mesenteric adenitis managed?
A
- Often self-limiting and doesn’t require treatment
- For treatment of fever and pain, give paracetamol or ibruprofen
- Drink lots of fluids
- Antibiotics → if caused by bacterial infection
