Mentall Illness And Suicide Flashcards
What is suicide?
Death caused by self-directed injurious behaviour with intent to die as a result of the behaviour
What is mental illness?
A condition which causes serious disorder in a person’s behaviour or thinking
What is institutionalisation?
The action of establishing something as a convention or norm in an organisation or culture
What is a master status?
When people come to see someone only in terms of that one label
What was Atkinson’s Coroners’ common sense knowledge?
He focuses on the taken-for-granted assumptions that coroners make when reaching verdicts.
Certain modes of death, location and circumstances of death, and life history were seen as typical of suicide.
What was Goffman’s 1961 Asylum study?
Showed the possible effects of being admitted to a ‘total institution’ such as a psychiatric hospital.
On admission, patients undergo a ‘mortification of the self’ in which their old identity is symbolically ‘killed off’ and replaced with ‘patient’
What did Braginski et al find?
Long term psychiatric patients manipulated their symptoms so as to appear ‘not well enough’ to be discharged but ‘not sick enough’ to be confined to the ward.
