Aripiprazole, drug group,side effects and dosage
10-15mg once daily usually. Max 30mg. Can be used as IM for rapid control. Treatment of schizophrenia. Anxiety, abnormal appitite, headache, stiffness. Cautions - risk of aspiration pneumonia, cerebrovascular disease.
Benperidol, drug group, side effects and dosage
Anti-psychotic. 0.25-0.75. Controls deviant antisocial sexual behaviour. Side effects: agitation, dizziness, dry mouth, insomnia etc. Cautions: ECG required if there is personal history of cardiovascular disease.
Chloropromazine hydrochloride, drug group, side effects and dosage
Anti-psychotic. 75-300mg a day. Up to 1g may be given in psychosis. Used for schizophrenia/other psychosis, mania and short term management of severe anxiety, violence etc. Side effects: Anxiety, glucose tolerance impaired, mood alerations, muscle tone increased.
Cautions: Cardiovascular risk factors.
Citalopram, drug group, side effects and dosage
SSRI, anti-depressant. Can be used for panic disorders. 20mg OD, increase by 20mg in intervals. Max dose 40mg. Side effects: Migraine, apathy (lack of feeling/interest),
Cautions: SSRIs known to increase the risk of bleeding due to platelet affect. Inc risk of postpartum haemorrhage.
Clozapine, drug group,side effects and dosage
Strong anti-psychotic, used in schizophrenic patients unresponsive to other anti-psychotics. Usual dose 200-450mg dauly. 900mg max dose daily. Side effetcs - Decreased appitite, hypertension, nausea, salivary gland enlargement.
Cautions = Blood counts must be normal before starting, should be monitored frequently (1-2 weeks), causes low white blood cell count, weakens immune system. CANNOT HAVE DURING PREGNANCY.
Clonazepam drug group,side effects and dosage
Epilepsy and panic disorders. Benzodiazepine. Side effects: Decreased alertness, resp depression, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, sleep disorders.
Cautions: Not for alcohol and drug abusers, resp depression. Avoid prolonged use.
Diazepam, drug group,side effects and dosage
Anti-anxiety. Benzo. Used for muscle spasm and severe acute anxiety. 15-30mg daily max in divided doses.
Side effects: Abnormal appitite, concentration impaired, gastro disorder, palpitations and vomiting.
Caution - Shouldnt be perscribed with opiods. Causes resp depression. Avoid prolonged use. Risk of dependence. Muscle weakness, organic brain changes.
Haloperidol, drug group,side effects and dosage
Anti-psychotic, usual dose 2-4mg daily. Can also be used to treat vomiting and nausea. Also for acute delirium and demntia (with risk of violence) - and for delusions and hallusinations, mania. Also can be used as IM - rapid control of severe agitation.
Side effects - depression, eye disorders, nausea, headache.
Cautions - not for lewy body dementia, CNS depression, parkinsons. Ensure no histroy of CV disease.
Lamotrigine, drug group, side effects and dosage
Anticonvulsant, mood stabiliser. Treatment of bipolar and seizures. Can be used in combination with valporate - changes dosage.
Side effects - agression, agitation, diarrhoea, drowsiness.
Cautions - Seizures may be exacerbated, risk of suicidal thoughts.
Sodium Valproate, drug group,side effects and dosage
Epilepsy treatment, migraines and bipolar mania. Mood stabiliser and anticonvulsant.
Side effects - abdominal pain, agitation, alopecia, anaemia, vomiting, drowsiness.
Cautions - DO NOT USE IN PREGNANCY, can cause neurodevelopmental disorders, even when men take it. Can cause suicidal thoughts. Lupus, liver dysfunction.
Lithium carbonate, drug group,side effects and dosage
Mood stabiliser. Creates neurochemical changes in the brain. Controlling episodes of mania and depression in the brain. Lithium toxicity levels need to be monitored could cause nausea, confusion, hypotension.
Cautions: risk of toxicity, diarrhoea, temors, weight gain, hypothyroidism, hypotension.
pregablin, drug group,side effects and dosage
CD. Used for anxiety, neuropathic pain and seizures.
Side effects: abdominal distension, abnormal appitite, muscle weakness.
Cautions: severe resp depression. Heart failure.
Lorazepam, drug group, side effects and dosage
Benzo, short term anxiety and insomnia associated with anxiety, panic attacks (IM).
Cautions - avoid prologned use, risk of dependency.
Side effects - alertness decreased, anxiety, depression, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, headache.
Lorazepam vs diazepam
Lorazepam = higher strength, longer lasting effect.
Diaze = less severe withdrawal symptoms. More rapid effect.
