What is the definition of mental health disorder
Results in significant changes in a persons thinking, emotional state and behaviour, and ability to function in social and occupational settings
Ex: Depression, Anxiety, insomnia, bipolar, schizophrenia
What is the definition of mental health problem?
Broad term that includes mental health disorders and less severe mental helath symptoms that do not meet diagnostic criteria but may dusrupt personal, social, and occupational functioning. Experienced and expressed uniquely by indiciduals
Ex: stressed, tired, anxious, worried
What was the evolution of psychiatry as a field of medicine?
Ancient Times: Divine punishment/ demonic processes
Hippocrates: Bodily fluid imbalance
Roman Empire: Divine punishment gained momentum with rise in christianity
Middle Ages: Hippocrates ideas were incorporated w/ divine punishment, medieval asylums for “cure”
Renaissance: Natural physical causes; psychosis people burnt as it was thought to be a physical cause -> banned by church in 25 century
Enlightenment: Psychological and social stress. Humane moral treatment pushed for
Modern Era: Biological causes +/- psychological and social stressors
