Mental health and OD Flashcards
Bipolar symptoms
FEEDS. *Flight of ideas. *Elation. *Energy. *Delusions of grandeur. *Spending.
Drug classes for bipolar
Benzodiazempines, antipsychotics.
Schizophrenia symptoms
Positive and negative psychotics symptoms. *Auditory hallucinations. *Broadcasting. *Control (delusions of) *Delusion *Echo (‘hearing’ own thoughts).
Schizophrenia drug class
antipsychotics
OD Paracetamol symptoms
N&V, hepatic necrosis. Paracetamol os a pro toxin - its metabolites are toxic.
Management of paracetamol OD
*Determine time of ingestion. *Take blood at 4 hours for level of toxin. *Determine antidote dose by comparing level to nomogram. *Antidote - N-Acetylsysteine (parvolex).
OD Opioids symptoms
A - coma? B - Reduced Resp. CO2 retention. C - Hypotension. D - low GCS, myosis.
Management of OD opioid
Manage ABCDE, then antidote - NALOXONE
OD of tricyclic symptoms
metabolic acidosis, marked antimuscarinic activity, cardiotoxic - arrhythmias. Mad as a hatter. Blind as a bat. Dry as a bone. Red as a beet. Hot as a hare.
Management of OD tricyclic
ABCDE, bicarbonate, DIAZEPAM.
OD hypnotics symptoms (eg benzodiazepine)
GABA receptor agonist. Confusion, delirium, hypotension, reduced RR, ataxic, hypothermia.
OD of a sympathomimetic symptoms (mimics adrenalin)
agitation, insomnia, hallucinations, myadriasis, tachycardia, hypertension, hyperthermia.
Antidote for sympathomimetic OD
DIAZEPAM
OD of anticholinergic symptoms e.g. TCA, antipsychotic.
Mad as a hatter. Blind as a bat. Dry as a bone. Red as a beet. Hot as a hare.
Antidote for antichloinergic
Bicarbonate, Diazepam.
OD of cholinergic symptoms
confused, drowsy, myosis, bradycardia, hypothermia, D&V, salivation.
antidote for OD of cholinergic
decontaminate, atropine.
What is the MoA of benzodiazepine? e.g. Diazepam.
GABA receptor agonist.
What is the action of an amtimuscarinic agent?
Reduces activation of organs a terminals of post ganglionic PSNS. eg. will reduce the PSNS down regulation of heart rate, therefore will cause tachycardia.
What is the treatment for bipolar or acute mania/hypomania?
give egs of drugs
Stop antidepressants
Start antipsychotic eg.
Aripiprazole
Valporate
Lithium
Check plasma levels
consider bezodiazapine as well.
When should a patient be treated for paracetamol overdose, and how?
Wait until 4 hours after ingestion - then take plasma paracetamol concentration - Above the treatment line - treat with IV acetylcystein
