- Admission for assessment for up to 28 days

- Treatment can be given against the patient’s wishes

- Admission for treatment for up to 6 months
- Renewable
- Allied Mental Health Professional (AMHP) + 2 doctors
- Treatment can be given against the patient’s wishes

A
- 72 hour assessment order
- Used as an emergency, when section 2 would cause an unacceptable delay
- GP + AMHP
- Often changed to section 2 upon arrival to hospital

A
A patient who is a voluntary patient in hospital can be legally detained by a doctor for 72 hours
