Definitions related to mental health
Health
A state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
Placebo effect
Changes in behaviour caused by the belief that one has been exposed to a treatment that will affect them in some way
Stress
A state of mental or physical tension that occurs when a person must adjust or adapt to their environment but they feel they do not have the capacity to do so
Mental health
The psychological state of someone who is functioning at a satisfactory level of emotional and behavioural adjustment
Wellbeing
The state of being comfortable, healthy or happy
Voluntary participation
Participation in a study whereby participants agree to take part in an experiment free from pressure or fear of negative consequences
Hypochondria
A preoccupation with minor bodily problems and the presence of illnesses that appear to be imaginary
Resilience
A person’s ability to properly adapt to stress and cope with adversity
Mental health problem
A disruption to a person’s usual level of social and emotional wellbeing, including when our abilities are reduced
Informed consent
Where a participant gives their written consent to participate in a study after being fully informed of the true nature and purpose of the experiment, any foreseeable risks and their rights before an experiment commences
Placebo
A fake treatment, such as a sugar pill
Mental disorder (mental illness)
The psychological state of someone who has emotional or behavioural problems serious enough to require psychiatric intervention
