What are the levels of awareness?
Conscious, sub conscious, unconscious

the part of the person that actively seeks to fulfill needs that must be met. ex hunger and warmth
ego
the part of the person that deals with the reality of the situation the person is in. including thoughts, feelings, common sense, and reasoning and problem solving. decides what to do and when
superego
the part of the person tat is concerned with morals and values. what the ego thinks and does against an inner feeling of right and wrong
What are signs to watch for regarding suicide?
deepening depression, final arrangements, sudden elevated mood, risk taking, presuicidal statements
Questions to ask patient considering suicide?
Are you thinking about suicide? do you have a plan?
What is most common dementia?
Alzheimer’s disease
What is Alzhiemer’s disease?
pervades most of the brain. nerve cell death, and tissue loss.
What happens to the brain of an Alzheimer’s pt?
cortex, shrivels damaging thinking, planning, and remembering
ventricles, fluid filled spaces grow larger
hippocampus, severe shrinkage affecting memories
what are predicted risk factors of Alzheimer’s ?
low education, age, female, head trauma, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, family history, heart disease
What are the 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s?
1) memory loss effecting day to day function
2) difficulty performing familiar tasks
3) problems with language
4) disorientation of time and place
5) decreased judgement
6) problems with abstract thinking
7) misplacing things
8) change in mood and behaviour
9) changes in personality
10) loss of initiative

What is vascular dementia?
commonly caused by a stroke. mixed dementia alzheimer’s and VaD.
What is frontotemporal dementia?
syndrome caused by degeneration of the frontal lobe of the brain.
What is Lewy body dementia?
deposits on brains nerve cells that disrupt them. has a rapid progression. similar symptoms of parkinsons and alzheimers
what is creuttzfedlt-jakob disease?
1-2 people out of a million get this. develops rapidly. caused by prions
What is PSW role for communicating with dementia pts?
approach from front introduce yourself provide reassurance talk slowly and clearly use body language reduce distractions use short sentences never argue with individual acknowledge pts feelings
what are communication tips of psw with dementia pts?
listen with eyes heart and ears eye contact pay attention to body language, language, facial expression respond to persons feelings touch is powerful give lots of respond time be prepared to repeat
how does dementia and depression overlap?
symptoms of depression are memory loss, confused thinking, apathy, disrupted sleep patterns and reduced appetite. same as alzheimer’s and other dementias
