Anxiety
Excessive worrying, causing impairment and distress
Subtypes:
- generalised anxiety disorder - excessive and ongoing worrying about events. Difficulty controlling.
- social anxiety - fear of social situations - rejection and evaluation
- phobia - persistent fear of object or situation
Obsessive compulsive disorder
Consists of obsessions (recurrent distressing thoughts) and compulsions (repetitive behaviours aimed to minimise distress)
Depression
Persistent low moods + loss of interest in activities + motivation
disrupted sleep and appetite
Bipolar
Cyclical mood disorder
Depressive and then mania (inflated self-esteem, increased risk taking) or hypomania (not as extreme as mania)
Type one - depressive and manic episodes
Type two - depressive and hypomania
Schizophrenia
Fundamental distortions of thinking.
Positive symptoms
Negative symptoms
Cognitive symptoms
Eating disorders
Anorexia Nervosa:
- refusal to maintain ‘normal’ bodyweight - intense fear of gaining weight
- disordered body perception
- amenorrhea, low blood pressure, dry skin, cracked nails, heart failure
- lack insight and deny that behaviour is problematic
Bulimia Nervosa:
- recurrent binge eating and inappropriate compensatory behaviour
- disordered body perception
- dental problems, intestinal disorders, kidney damage
- have insight and do consider their behaviour as problematic
