phobias
mental disorders where one experiences high levels of anxiety in response to a specific stimulus
P - emotional characteristics
rapid anxiety, panic, fainting in extreme cases
P - behavioural characteristics
avoiding the stimulus in day to day life - negatively reinforcing it (which maintains the phobia)
P - cognitive characteristics
recognise that the fear is excessive
Depression
Depression is a mood disorder. Individuals lack interest in usual activities and suffer intense sadness as well as irrational thoughts
D - emotional characteristics
Intense sadness, irritability, apathy (loss of interest of enjoyment), feelings of worthlessness, anger.
D - behavioural characteristics
neglection of appearance, lack/too much of sleep, lack of/too much eating, loss of energy, sadness
D - cognitive characteristics
irrational thoughts, lack of concentration, low self esteem
OCD
anxiety disorder when one gets anxious from obsessions and compulsions. The person believes compulsions will reduce anxiety
O - emotional characteristics
worry, anxiety, distress
O - behavioural characteristics
compulsions with rigidly applied rules, including repetitive behaviour
O - cognitive characteristics
obsessions dominate and can’t be controlled. They recognise their actions and thoughts are unreasonable, but believe something bad will happen if they don’t do it
