Definition: Menstrual cycle.
Monthly cycle involving the MATURATION and RELEASE of an egg.
Name 4 hormones of the menstrual cycle.
- FSH (Follicle STIMULATING hormone).
- LH
- Oestrogen.
- Progesterone.
Name gland it comes from and 2 roles of the FSH.
- Released by pituitary gland.
- Causes an ovaries’ egg to mature.
- STIMULATES production of oestrogen.
Name gland it comes from and the role of LH.
- Released by pituitary gland.
- Stimulates release of a MATURE EGG.
TIP: It’s called ovulation.
Name where oestrogen is produced and 3 roles.
- Ovaries.
- Causes development in the uterus lining (it THICKENS it).
- Stimulates production of LH.
- Stops production of FSH.
Name where progesterone is produced and 2 roles.
- Ovaries AFTER ovulation.
- MAINTAINS lining of the uterus.
- Stops RELEASE of FSH and LH.
TIP:
Progesterone levels drop = breakdown of the lining.
Stage 1 of the menstrual cycle (days 1-4):
Uterus lining breaks down - resulting in a PERIOD.
Stage 2 of the menstrual cycle (days 4-14):
Uterus lining BUILDS UP again (more thicker).
Stage 3 of the menstrual cycle (day 14):
Ovulation = egg released from one of the ovaries.
Stage 4 of the menstrual cycle (day 15-28):
- Uterus lining is MAINTAINED, ready for the arrival of a FERTILISED egg.
- No fertilised egg attached = lining BREAKS DOWN again.
