What is premenstrual syndrome?
A
- must have at least ONE affective and ONE somatic symptom during the 5 days leading up to menses in each of the 3 prior menstrual cycles
- affective: depression, angry outbursts, irritability, anxiety, confusion, social withdrawal
- somatic: breast tenderness, bloating, heading, swelling of extremities
- symptoms are relieved within 4 days of menstruation

What is premenstrual dysphoric disorder?
A
- at least 5 of the following 11 symptoms during most menstrual cycles of the last year (with at least 1 of the first 4)
- depressed mood/hopelessness
- anxiety/tension
- affective symptoms
- anger/irritability
- decreased interest in activities
- difficulty concentrating
- lethary
- change in appetite
- hypersomnia/insomnia
- feeling overwhelmed
- physical symtoms: breast tenderness, bloating, swelling, headaches, weight gain, joint pain
- symptoms interfere with social/occupational functioning
- symptoms are directly related to menstrual cycle
- present in last 2 cycles
