pituitry gland releases FSH (follicle stimulating hormone), which targets the ovaries. follicles situated in ovaries stimulates FSh to start the maturation of the ovum (in preparation for ovulation (the release of the ovum into the fallopian tube)
What are other hormones produced during this time?
Oestrogen - released by ovaries and causes changes in cervix
what changes occur in cervix?
mucus increases and the uterine lining or endometrium thickens and prepares for implantation.
what do these changes ensure?
that conditions are conducive within the reproductive system for fertilisation to occur.
what happens when oestrogen reaches a high level?
signials the pituitry gland to release a sudden surge of the hormone LH
what does the release of LH cause?
causes the release of the ovum from it follicle
what is it called?
ovulation
