What causes male pattern baldness?
Conversion of testosteron in men to dihydrotestosterone, which hair folicles are sensitive to.
Drug treatments for baldness?
Finasteride, Minoxidil.
How does finasteride work?
Blocks conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone bc its a 5 alpha reductase inhibitor.
What the diseases of the prostate?
Prostate cancer, Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), Prostatitis.
What is BPH?
Increase of the size of the prostate as age increses.
What are the symptosm of BPH?
Impedes urine flow (Dribbles).
What are the different severity of IPSS?
Mild (1-7)
Moderate (8-19)
Severe (20-35)
What are the treatments for BPH?
Watchful waiting (Mild), Surgical (Transurtheral inscision of the prostate TUIP) used in severe cases, Drug treatments of finasteride.
What are the treatment of ED?
Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (Sildenafil, Tadalafil, Vardenafil), Oral testosterone, Injections (Caverject).
How does Phosphodiesterase Type inhibitors work?
Prevents breakdown of cGMP, which sustains the erection for longer, and an erection can only occur due to sexual stimulation due to NO synthesis.
