Meningococcal Vaccine Flashcards
What is the most common Meningococcal Serotype in Canada?
B (No vaccine against it)
What are the two types of Meningococcal Vaccines?
MCV-C (Serotype C) and MCV-4 (Serotype A, C, Y, W-135).
What is the worst Serotype of Neisseria Menincococci?
C. Reduced in recent history.
When should we give the first Meningococcal vaccine, which one, and why?
At 12 years. Earlier doesn’t give sustained protection. Earlier if at high risk (2 months). The MCV-C should be given first to give protection against the worst one, and the MCV-4 not too effective this early.
When does meningococcal strain C usually hit?
15-19 years old.
What is the mortality rate of invasive meningococcal disease?
10%. Worse if C or septicaemia disease.
When does Serotype Meningococcal B usually hit?
Less than 5. 70% of cases.
Why is there no vaccine for Serotype B meningococcus?
Polysaccharides against B are very poorly immunogenic.
At what age should MCV-4 be given?
About 12 years of age. (Grade 7)
What are the high risk meningococcal risk factors?
Anatomical or functional a splenic (SCD!)
Primary antibody deficiency disorders.
Complement disorders.
Military
Lab personnel with exposure to meningococcus, high risk areas.
What are the more common names for MCV-4 and MCV-C?
MCV-4 - Menactra.
MCV-C - Menjugate.
