Three types of germs that cause meningitis
Virus, bacteria and TB
Meningitis
Inflammation of the meninges and brain caused by a virus or bacteria
Signs and symptoms for bacterial meningitis
Fever, vomiting, poor feeding, restlessness, seizures, high pitched cry,moulding fontanels, poor muscle tone, petechial rash, headache, nuchal rigidity, positive brudzinski’s sign, photophobia, increased ICP
Positive Kernig’s sign
Severe stiffness of hamstrings
Positive Brudzinski’s sign
Severe stiff neck; causes patient to flex knees and hips when neck is flexed
Diagnosis Bacterial Meningitis by….
Lumbar puncture has increased pressure, increased protein, decreased glucose and increased WBC
Bacterial meningitis drug therapies
Antibiotics, steroids, acetaminophen, antipyretics
SIADH
Hyponatremia and excessive release of the antidiuretic hormone, S/S include water retention, lethargy, coma, seizures, nausea, vomiting and electrolyte imbalance
Waterhouse Friderichsen Syndrome
Meningococcal Sepsis; sudden onset of overwhelming septic shock
S/S of Viral meningitis
Fever, headache, anorexia, abdominal pain, n/v, nuchal rigidity, photophobia, bulging fontanels, maculopapular rash
What does the LP look like in Viral Meningitis
Increased WBC slightly, normal glucose, protein slightly elevated, negative bacterial culture
