Meninges Flashcards
What is the scalp?
The skin and connective tissue covering the cranial vault.
What is the extent of the scalp?
Superior nuchal lines (posterior), supraorbital margins (anterior), and zygomatic arches (lateral).
What are the 5 layers of the scalp?
Skin, Connective Tissue, Aponeurosis, Loose Connective Tissue, Periosteum (SCALP).
Which layer contains many hair follicles and sebaceous glands?
Skin.
What is the function of the galea aponeurotica?
It provides attachment for the occipitofrontalis muscle.
What is the significance of the connective tissue layer in the scalp?
It is rich in blood supply and causes profuse bleeding in injuries due to its attachment to vessel walls.
What are the nerves that innervate the scalp anteriorly?
Supratrochlear and Supraorbital nerves (from the ophthalmic division of trigeminal nerve, V1).
What are the layers of meninges?
Dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater.
What is the function of the meninges?
To protect the brain, provide a framework for blood vessels, and enclose cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
What are dural venous sinuses?
Blood-filled spaces in the dura mater that drain blood from the brain and meninges.
What is the clinical importance of emissary veins?
They connect scalp veins to the dural venous sinuses and can spread infections.
