Meningcoccal disease Flashcards
2 types of meningococcal diseases
Septicaemia + Meningitis
Meningococcal Septicaemia
Bacteria multipy
What is the causative organism
Neisseria Meningitides (Meningococcus) - Aerobic gram negative bacterium Humans are the only reservoir
How come they have pathogenic subtypes?
They have a polysaccharide capsule that resists pathogenesis and lysis
How many subtypes
13
Transmission of meningococcal disease
Aerosol
Droplets
Direct contact with respiratory secretions
Risk factors of meningococcal disease
Seasons especially in winter Smokers Passive smoking Recent influenza A Immunodeficiency Abnormal Spleen function Living in 'closed' communities e.g. halls of residence Age
Which meningococcal disease is worst?
Meningococcal sepsis
What causes the rash in meningococcal disease
Severe infection disrupts the body’s usual clotting cascade
Abnormal bleeding occurs in some parts of the body
In other blood vessels, clotting of the blood blocks flow of blood
Rashes
Purpuric rash
Petechial rash
Meningcoccal meningitis
Meninges around the brain are infected, damaging the blood vessels in the lining of brain. Allows bacteria to leak into and infect the cerebrospinal fluid. The meninges become inflamed and pressure around the brain is increased.
