Mendelism Flashcards
1
Q
Why did Mendel use pea plants?
A
self-fertilie, hermaphrodite, plants differ from each other in a number of discrete characteristics
2
Q
What are the assumptions of the Hardy-Weinberg model?
A
- No selection - individuals of all genotypes have equal rates of survival and equal reproductive success
- No mutation - no new alleles are created or converted into another by mutation
- no migration - no alleles leave the population
- the population infinitely large so that sampling effects and other random errors are negligible
- individuals in a population mate randomly
3
Q
What are the consequences of the Hardy Weinberg equation?
A
1.
4
Q
Why would there still be cystic fibrosis in the population, if all cystic fibrosis suffered had no children?
A
Because of carriers
the incidence of heterozygote carriers is larger than homozygous individuals
- you would have to get rid of all the carriers and the all the sufferers
