act 1 - He isn’t able to follow the gender role either as unemployed so not the breadwinner – this leads to guilt and frustration.
‘Ah can actually feel my heart turnin’ into butter’
John has his weaknesses and is filled with guilt – he confides in Maggie – able to see his true emotions/feelings with her. He often dwells on the past – misses the Jenny he knew.
‘There’s a depression on’
He’s quick to blame other factors – not taking responsibility – probably due to the shame
“hundreds o us Maggie, begging for the chance tae earn enough for food and a roof over our heids”
Shows he struggles to find work and provide for the family
John: “things’ll no aye be like this , jenny.”
He is hopeful that he can provide for his family despite not having a stable job.
When Maggie wants to save food until tomorrow, John says: “ach, tomorrow!”
He has a live for today attitude and is only concerned with his own needs in the present rather than thinking of the future.
Maggie: “you leave John alane! He does his best for us”
Maggie always sticks up for him, especially when someone (in this case, lily) says he isn’t able to provide for his family.
Maggie: “he’s a man and I’m a wumman. We’re flesh and blood”
sticking to traditional gender roles and therefore deferring to him as the head of the household
