Men And Women and equality Flashcards
Roles in family relationships
Christian complementarians: believes that the role of wife is to support her husband by managing the family home and raising their children (Catholic Church)
Christian egalitarians: Believe that men and women were created in gods image and are equal with equal responsibilities and duties (c of E leans towards)
Roles in Christian communities
Catholics do not permit women to become priests or bishops
Catholics:
- Jesus chose men to be his disciples and priests represent Jesus
- authority of the church has been passed on through men, a tradition that cannot be broken
C of e:
- Jesus came to break down barriers between people, not reinforce them and as he was born in a different time he followed the tradition then and if he were alive today he would include women among his chosen disciples
- God created woman in his image as well as men
Roles of men and women in religious upbringing
- bible teaches that parents have a responsibility towards their children and are required to discipline them and provide them with the knowledge and understanding of the Christian faith
- baptised within the first year, attend Sunday school and at 11, can get confirmed
Amish community
- instructed to marry only other Amish
- schooling ends at 14 after which they are taught practical skills
- The man is in charge of providing for the family’s needs by going out to work
- Women take on the domestic role and the primary care of the children
- at the age of 16 Amish children are allowed to live outside the community and can decide whether they want to become fully baptised members of the Amish community
Teachings and belief of equality
- teaches that we were made in gods image and all have worth and value and they believe that people should respect all human beings regardless
The influence of culture
- churches have been slow to ensure equality, this is because various members and institutions benefited from inequality so had no reason to change their views
- for example in the 19th and early 20th centuries Christian teachings were used to justify the unequal distribution of wealth
Gender prejudice and discrimination
Christian egalitarianism:
• Believe that men and women are created by God as equals
• they have different biological and physical make ups but are equal in every aspect
• should have equal opportunities to succeed and should treat each other fairly
Christian complementarianism:
• say that men and women have been created by God to be different and to have different roles in life, including in Christian life.
• roles for men are leadership roles, with women taking supporting roles
Quotes of equality
- “ God created mankind in his own image” [genesis 1.27]
- “ to love one another” [John 13.24]
- “ because all of you are one in the Messiah Jesus…A male or a female” [Galatians 3.28]
