Q

multi-store model (msm)

A

a representation of how memory works in terms of three stores called sensory register, short term memory and long term memory. it also describes how information is transferred from one store to another, how it is rememebered and how it is forgotten

Q

sensory register

A

this is whre the sesory stimuli from the environment is stored, although it only lasts for a fraction of a second unless attention is paid to it. The store can be divided into different senses. but the two main ones are iconic memory (for images), it is coded visually and echoic memory (for sounds), it is coded acoustically. The capacoty for the store is quite large, but the duration is very short. very little of what goes on in the sesory register passes further into the memory system unless you pay attention to it.

Q

short term memory

A

if attention is paid to a stimulus, it will enter STM. infromation is coded acoustically, and there is a capacity of 7 +or- 2 chunks of infromation. the duration is around 30 seconds unless the information is rehearsed. maintainance rehearsal can be used to keep infromation in STM (saying something over and over again).
keep info in STM as long as you keep rehearsing, if you rehearse it long enough it passes onto the LTM.
