An overview of several useful memory techniques
What is the Link System?
A memory technique to remember things in a sequence (in order).
What is the Method of Loci?
Also known as a memory journey, memory palace, and mind palace technique
A memory system that involves attaching ideas or objects to a familiar environment.
eg. Your home, a video game level, etc.
What is the Phonetic Alphabet?
A memory technique that associates sounds (phonemes) to numbers to form words.
Why does the Phonetic Alphabet system work?
The mind performs poorly at remembering numbers because numbers inheriently have no meaning. People are innately better at remembering objects and stories.
What types of associations work best when trying to remember things?
You are more likely to remember things that are obsurd (crazy) and vivid.
How can you combine the phonetic alphabet and link system to recall any item from a list in any order.
As you work through the list of things to remember, associate each one to the next number in the phonetic alphabet. Make the connection vivid and obsurd.
