Memory & Storage Flashcards
What is a Computer?
It is an electronic device that takes input, processes it then outputs it.
What is in a CPU
In a central processing unit, there is a ALU, Control Unit, Cache, Clock and buses.
What does the ALU perform?
The arithmetic logic unit performs calculations and logical decisions.
What does the control unit do ?
It sends signals to control how data is moved around the CPU
What can cache do?
It provides access to frequently used instructions and data
What can clock do?
Provides an internal pulse or a heartbeat at a constant rate which synchronises the fetch-execute cycle.
What is cloud storage?
Remote servers that can store data in the internet.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of cloud storage
Ad: - access files anywhere - easy backup - collaboration - no pc memory cost Di: - costly - need internet
What are the advantages of magnetic secondary storage
High data capacity, fast access, low cost, suitable for cloud storage
Why is secondary storage needed
Rom is read only and ram is volatile.
- storage for data when turned off.
- backup and archive
What is ram?
Volatile memory which holds data, os and programs in use by the CPU.
What is ROM?
Read only memory which holds the first instructions when the computer is first turned on
