Memory (multistore model of memory) Flashcards
what is the sensory register?
Its the place where information is stored at the senses e.g. the eyes, ears, nose, fingers, tongue and corresponding areas of the brain.
how long does info stay in the sensory register?
a very short time (milliseconds)
what happens in STM when new info is being processed?
STM has limited duration so will disappear if isn’t rehearsed and repeated (maintenance rehearsal) and has a very limited capacity so when info is being processed it will push out or displace previous information.
WHat is maintanace rehearsal?
this is when info is repeated and rehearsed until it enters LTM and Atkinson and Shiffrin found a direct link between rehearsal in STM and rehearsal in LTM

AO3: Supporting evidence
Brain scans have shown there is a difference between STM and LTM. Beardsley found that the prefrontal cortex is active during LTM but not STM. This provides strong support for MSM
AO3: The MSM is too simple
The MSM suggests that STM and LTM are both unitary stores, however research does not support this. The working memory model is divided into different stores and research supports this, like the different types of LTM (episodic, semantic and procedural).
AO3: How are STM and LTM different?
Logie found that STM relies on LTM. Runchkin demonstrated this by asking ppts to recall a bunch of words (real words and pseudo words) and he found that there was more brain activity when real words were being processed than the pseudo words, indicating that the other areas of the brain are required than STM. therefore this suggest that STM is just a part of LTM and not just a separate store.
