Memory Loss Flashcards
Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)
A progressive brain disease associated with repeated traumatic brain injuries that causes problems with cognition and memory.
How CTE impacts behavior
- Impulsive behavior
- Confusion due to memory loss
- Slurred speech
- Erratic or aggressive behavior
- Agitation
- Experience apathy
Apathy
A lack of interest and motivation to do things
How CTE impacts emotion
- Emotional instability in the form of intense mood swings
- Outbursts of anger
- Depression
- Apathy
Alzheimer’s disease
A brain disease that involves the degeneration of neurons in regions of the brain that are involved in cognitive skills and memory formation and retrieval.
How Alzheimer’s disease impacts behavior
- May become lost or disoriented and not know where they are or how to get home
- Particular habits may change
- Apathy
- May become more outgoing
- Easily agitated
- Behave aggressively
How Alzheimer’s disease impacts emotion
- Abrupt changes in mood for no reason
- Feeling fearful or suspicious
- Apathy
- Feeling anxious
- Feeling angry and frustrated
Atrophy
A decrease in size of tissue or organ
Neurofibrillary tangles
Abnormal accumulations of tau proteins within neurons of the brain
Amyloid plaques
Accumulations of scar tissue formed by deteriorating neurons and clusters of beta-amyloid protein
Neuron loss
Loss of neurons and connections between neural pathways
Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome (WKS)
A rare neurological disorder caused by thiamine (Vitamin B1) deficiency leasing to the degeneration of brain cells and characterized by difficulties forming new memories and retrieving stored memories.
Neurological disorder
A disorder of the nervous system affecting the brain, spinal cord and neurons of the body.
Nervous system
The system that produces and relays messages between the brain, spinal cord, and neurons of the body
How WKS impacts behavior
- Confabulation where individuals make up stories to fill in the gaps in their memory
- Apathy
- Agitation
- Repeating the same questions or stories
- Involuntary rapid eye movements
- Slurred speech and ataxia
How WKS impact emotion
- Memory deficits can lead to feelings of frustration
- Apathy
- Anxiety
