memory eval Flashcards
Was Baddeley study meaningful for material - evaluating research into Capacity coding and duration of STM and LTM
Badly study did not use meaningful material
the word used had no personal meaning to participants
when info is meaningful people will use semantic coding even in STM
Did Bahrick et al’s study have High external validity- evaluating research into Capacity coding and duration of STM and LTM
Yes
they used memories that were part of real life
real life meaningful memories means that the findings are more likely to be accurate representation memory in the real world
confounding variable is not controlled such as fact some of participants may have recently looked over yearbook photos
Who’s research over simplified capacity in stm - evaluating research into Capacity coding and duration of STM and LTM
Miller’s research may have oversimplified capacity in STM
Cowan 2001 reviewed other research concluded that capacity of STM was for chunks which is lower than Miller’s estimate of seven and or to two
Means that excepted the capacity of STM may be in accurate
Distinct STM and LTM systems - the multi store model of memory
Large base of research supporting the idea of distinct STM and LTM systems
Brain-damaged case study patient KS his STM was impaired following motorcycle accident
LTM still intact
Shows STM & LTM different memory stores
Are there different types of STM- the multi store model of memory
KF Had poor recall of information read to him
could you recall the same information if read himself
view that STM is only one store not correct and oversimplified
Are the memories in the LTM encoded semantically- the multi store model of memory
It makes sense that memories in the LTM are encoded semantically
For example might recall the general message put across in a political speech
Rather than all the words heard
the msm therefore has face validity
Clinical evidence on LTM
That is clinical evidence to support view that there are different types of LTM
HM cuddling you procedural memory is not episodic or semantic memories
Got better at tasks e.g. drawing by looking at reflection in mirror unable to recall doing previously
Demonstrates one store can be damaged but others unaffected
Serious lack of control with brain damage patients cannot see what they were like before injury
could be that their memory structures do not represent those of normal people
Brain scans on The nature and models of memory- LTM
Evidence from brain scans showing different types of memory stored in different parts of the brain
Tulving found episodic and semantic memory both recalled from prefrontal cortex
However left PFC was involved in semantic memories and right PFC episodic memories
Support view physical reality to the different types of LTM
support for WMM with KF - The WMM
Support for WMM from shallice and Warrington - KF
After damage KS had to I STM ability for verbal info
could process visual info normally
Difficulty with sounds good recall letters and digits
Suggests phonological loop damaged other areas intact
Evidence to support existence of separate STM stores for visual and acoustic info
Central executive on WMM
Cognitive psychologist say lack of clarity over central executive
This part not really explained
Needs to be more clearly specified than just being an attentional process
WMM incomplete?
