Memory And Storage (using Craig and Dave videos) Flashcards
What is the difference between RAM and ROM
RAM is volatile meaning when it loses power all data is lost while ROM is non-volatile
RAM is random access memory while ROM stores the bios
What is cloud storage?
When data is stored on a server or computer away from the home pc
What is the advantage of using cloud storage?
It is accessable anywhere with an internet connection and if the home pc is damaged then the data is safe
Name different types of secondary storage
DVD, CD, Hard drive, SSD, tape, memory stick, flash
What types of secondary storage are SSDs
Memory sticks, SSDs and flash memory
Why is secondary storage needed?
Data cannot be stored inside RAM after the pc is turned off therefore large applications must be placed on secondary storage medias
What is the advantages with SSDs?
They are faster than other types of storage, they are protected against damage from vibrations (as they dont have moving parts) and are smaller than other types
What is the advantages with hard disk drives
They are cheap in large storage numbers (can store terabytes of storage for a very cheap price) they are useful for backups
What is the disadvantages with hard disk drives
They are slow (fastest being 7200 rpm) they are large and are easily breakable from their moving parts as vibrations can cause the needle to scratch the disk
What are the disadvantages with SSDs
They are very expensive especially in larger formats
What is a disadvantage with cloud storage
It will usually require a subscription meaning overtime it can be very expensive and if the payment isnt met then your data could be lost
