Memory and storage Flashcards
What is secondary storage
long term storage of data, files, software and operating systems
Why do we need secondary storage
to access data later, use software or interact with the computer
What would happen without secondary storage
Software would have to be reinstalled every time its used, you couldn’t save data
3 main types of storage are?
Optical, Solid state, Magnetic
Describe optical storage
A laser light creates marks in a pattern on the disk to then be translated and read by another laser
Describe magnetic storage
read/write across the medium and change the magnetisation from each of the mediums
Describe solid state storage
Made of microchips, the state of the switches determines the storage of a 1 to a 0
Characteristics of storage devices
Capacity, Speed, Portability, Durability, Reliability, Cost
Characteristics + examples of optical storage
CDs and DVDs
light weight for transportation
Characteristics + example of magnetic storage
Hard drive:
Cheaper
Quick access
Available in large capacities
Characteristics and example of solid state storage
USB: Compact portable high speed low power consumption expensive
