Memory and sensory memory Flashcards
What is memory?
The storage and retrieval of information aquired through learning
Encoding
converting information to a useable form
Storage
retaining information in memory
Retrieval
Information recovered from memory when needed
Structural features
permanent built in features of memory that do not change
Control processes
Selected by the individual may vary across situations
Sensory memory
The entry area of memory
All the stimuli that bombard our senses are retained in their original form for a very brief time in memory sub systems called sensory registers
Iconic memory
visual sensory memory
Duration: images only last in iconic memory for 0.3 of a second
- this is long enough for the identification of the stimulus to begin
Echoic memory
auditory sensory memory
Duration: stores sounds for 3-4 seconds
