  • Baddeley & Hitch (1974) challenged the idea that the STM is a single-store
  • Working memory refers to the system temporarily maintaining mental representations that are relevant to the performance of a cognitive task in an active/attentive state.

Phonological Loop

A
  • The inner voice
  • Hold information in the speech-based form.
  • Can be thought of an s a verbal rehearsal loop (e.g remembering a string of numbers by repeating them silently)
  • Also used to hold what we are preparing to speak loud

  • Has limited compacity and deals with any cognitively demanding tasks

  • It deals with the rehearsal of visual and/or spatial information
  • suggest that it has two components:
    • Visual cache: stores information about visual form and color
    • Inner scribe: deals with spatial and movement information and is involved in the panning and execution of body/limb movements
