Q

What is capacity and how is it represented

A

A measure of how much can be held in the memory. It is represented in terms of bits of information, such as numbers of digits

Q

What is coding

A

The way information is changed so it can be stored in the memory. Information enters the brain via the senses. It is then stored in various forms, such as visual codes, acoustic codes or semantic codes

Q

What is the long term memory

A

Your memory for events that have happened in the past. this lasts from anywhere between 2 minutes to 100 years. LTM has potentially unlimited duration and capacity and tends to be coded semantically

Q

What is short term memory

A

Your memory for immediate events. STM’s are measured in in seconds and minutes rather than hours and days. They will disappear unless they are rehearsed. STM also has a limited capacity of 4 items or chunks and tends to coded acoustically and is sometimes referred to as working memory and lasts around 18 seconds
