Memory Flashcards
Strengths of the MMM
- influential model, produces a lot of research
- lots of research to support the elements of model
- brain scans support idea of seep rate stores
- case studies support separate stores
Weaknesses of MMM
- STM is not a unitary store
- No linear flow
- information can flow backwards
- over reliance on rehearsal
Case studies to support MMM
- case of k.f
- case of h.m
- case of Clive wearing
Case study to support Sensory Memory

Outline the Working Model of Memory
1) Central Executive
- the boss
- directs the information for further processing
- limited capacity and is modality free
2) Episodic Buffer
- integrates both storages of information
- limited capacity
3) Visuo-Spatial Scratchpad ( inner eye)
- processes visual and spatial information dealing with movement and action as well as still images
4) Phonological Loop ( inner ear)
Two parts: articulatory loop and phonological store
-phonological store: stores acoustically coded information with limited capacity
- articulatory loop: deals with speech production as it acts as a verbal rehearsal loop, allows subvocal rehearsal of information stores in phonological store
Strengths of WMM
- accounts for our ability to store information
- linear flow
- dual task study provides evidence of subcomponents
Weaknesses of WMM
- Insufficient information about central executive
- only focuses on STM
- not comprehensive
Case studies which provide evidence for WMM
- Baddeley et al 1973
- Baddeley + Hitch 1974
Outline the multi-store model of memory
1) External stimuli: entered via 5 senses
2) Sensory Memory: information can be lost through decay and it has to be attended to for to pass through to the Short term Memory
3) Short Term Memory: limited capacity and duration. Capacity= 7+/-2. Duration= 18-30secs.
- information can be lost through decay and displacement
- for it to pass through to LTM it has to be maintenance rehearsed
4) Long Term Memory: unlimited capacity and duration.
- information lost by decay and interference
