• environmental stimuli enters sensory memory
• stimuli needs attention or it will decay
• if given attention, transferred to STM
• info is encoded+rehearsed
• if info not rehearsed, it will not remain in STM
• will not remember this info
• further rehearsal info moves from STM to LTM
• when in LTM, info remains for a long period of time until it is retrieved back into STM
