Memory Flashcards
Define ‘capacity’ in the context of memory.
The amount of information that can be stored in memory.
Define ‘duration’ in the context of memory.
The length of time that information remains in memory.
Define ‘coding’ in the context of memory.
Changing the format of information for use in memory (aka encoding).
What is long term memory (LTM)?
Memory that retains information indefinitely with unlimited duration and capacity.
What is the capacity and coding type of the Central Executive?
Capacity: limited to 4 items; Coding: any type of information.
What are the two components of the Visuospatial Sketchpad?
- Visual Cache
- Inner Scribe
What is the purpose of the Episodic Buffer?
Records episodes and transfers information to LTM.
What is the capacity and coding type of the Episodic Buffer?
Capacity: limited to 4 chunks; Coding: verbal and visual.
What are the two components of the Phonological Loop?
- Phonological Store
- Articulatory Process
What is the capacity and coding type of the Phonological Loop?
Capacity: what can be said in 2 seconds; Coding: acoustically.
Phonological loop outline
Deals with auditory information in speech form the phonological store stores the words you hear and articulatory processes is the inner voice which repeats words in a loop
Central exec outline
Acts as a filter coordinates information to their slave components
DETEMINES WHICH INFO IS PAID ATTENTION TO
VSS outline
Inner eye
Visual cache stores visual information PASSIVELY
Inner scribe processes visual and movement info
AO3 strength of WMM
STM consisted of its own stores w/ with limited capacity
Baddley and hitch 2 different tasks and use 2 different stores (visual articulatory loop and verbal CE) recall wasn’t affected
Both similar tasks both articulatory recall was affected in the first task
Weakness of WMM
CE is oversimplified not much information on how iT CONTROLS ALL OF WMM or how it works modality free and how info transferred to slave components
+- master component yet not enough detail on HOW IT CARRYS OUT the processes
