Memory Flashcards
What is a false memory?
A memory which did not happen but which feels like a true memory.
Context
Environment in which something happens in, can act as a cue for recall
Interference
Similar memories competing with each-other can cause you to forget
Reconstructive memory
Bits of info reassembled during recall as gaps are filled using past experiences
Serial position effect
People more like to recall words at start and end of a list. Position of words affects likeliness of recall.
Primary effect
Easier to recall words at start of list as they have been rehearsed
Recency effect
Easier to recall words at the end of a list as they have just been heard
Chunking
Breaking down words to help memory
Multi-store model
model of memory which explains how information is processed and stored in 3 main stores
Capacity
Amount of info stored
Duration
How long something last for
Procedural memory
LTM of complex actions/skills
Semantic memory
LTM of knowledge/facts
Episodic memory
LTM of personal events (eg; your birthday)
Long term memory
Large capacity, long duration, coded semantically (meaning)
Short term memory
Limited capacity, limited duration, coded acoustically (sound)
Sensory memory
Large capacity, short duration, coded through our 5 senses
Retrieval
Accessing info from our brain
Storage
Keeping info in our memory
Encoding
Changing info into a form which can be stored
What factors affect memory (5)
Attention, repetition, emotion, sleep, context
How does attention affect memory?
If ur focus on the info ur more likely to remember it later
How does repetition affect memory?
Maintenance rehearsal helps recall
How does emotion affect memory?
emotional events are easier to remember due to a larger response from our brain making it easier to recall
