memory 02: the multi-store memory model Flashcards
who first described the MSM and when?
Atkinson and Shiffrin, 1968
what are the three memory stores of the MSM?
sensory register, short-term memory store, long-term memory store
what was the order of the processes and stores in the MSM?
environmental stimuli - sensory register - attention - short term memory store - prolonged rehearsal - long term memory store
what is the sensory register and its key features?
- the place where information of the different senses is held in the corresponding areas of the brain
- high capacity
- duration of milliseconds
what is the role of attention?
- it is the first step in remembering something
- it transfers data to STM
what are the key features of the short-term memory store?
- information stored here is used for immediate tasks
- limited duration unless you repeat
what happens when new information enters the STM?
it can displace the original information (due to limited capacity)
what is maintenance rehearsal?
- repetition of information to keep in the STM and eventually create a LTM
- atkinson and shiffrin proposed a direct relationship between rehearsal and the strength of LTM
what is long-term memory?
potentially unlimited capacity and duration
what is retrieval?
the process of getting information from LTM, passing by through the STM on the way
what are the strengths of the MSM?
- evidence supporting the theory:
