What is connotation?
Figurative meaning of a word or expression.
Example:
“I am feeling blue.”
What does antithesis mean? Does it mean contrast or polar opposites?
An antithesis places two completely contrasting ideas or clauses in a juxtaposition.
Ex. “Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.”
What does pathos mean? What does it connect with?
A literary device that connects the audiences emotions to make them see an emotional perspective.
Ex: Romeo and Juliet, and To Kill A Mockingbird.
What does parallelism mean? Does it mean situations that parallel in nature?
Similar sentences/gramattical structure to show that ideas are equally important.
Ex. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”
“I came, i saw, and I conquered.”
What does scansion mean? Does it mean the deeper meaning of a line?
Scansion is the use of visual ques to identify the metric meter of a line in a stanza.
Ex. “Shall i compare thee to a summer’s day?”
Is an epigram a figure of speech? What does an epigram entail?
An epigram is a short pith saying, with a satirical twist at the end.
Ex. “If you can’t be a good example, you’ll just have to be a horrible warning.”
What does an elegy invoke? Are both hubris and a elegy a dramtic form in literature?
An elegy is a mourn of loss. Common in music, pastoral or personal. Hubris - excessive pride that leads to someone’s downfall, which is a dramatic form.
“Norm, the worm, took the garden by storm this morn.”
Assonance of consonance?
“The coolness of the night, refreshes my skin.”
