Memorise Flashcards
What is homeostatis
When all the internal enviromental factors are kept at a steady point
What is respiration
A series of enzyme controlled reactions that release energy stored in glucose
What is Mitosis
Cell division/ mitosis is the process by which an organism can increase its cell numbers during growth and repair
What is Genetic engineering
Genetic engineering is the transfer of genetic information (DNA) from one cell to another cell
Define the term genetically modified organism
A genetically modified organism is one that has had its DNA altered by the addition of genetic material from another organism
What is a chromatid
replicated copy of a chromosome visible during mitosis.
What are the two internal communication systems in the human body.
Nervous system
Endocrine system
What is pollination
Pollination is the transfer of pollen from the anther to the sticky stigma. This occurs before fertalisation.
What is an allele
Different versions of the same genes
Phenotype
This is the expression of an organisms genotype (how it appears or behaves)
Genotype
A genotype is how the two alleles of a particular gene carried by an organism are represented using letters
State the function of the lungs
Lungs are gas exchange organs used to take oxygen into the bloodstream and remove carbon dioxide from the bloodstream
Describe the movement of gases between the alveoli and capillaries during gas exchange
Oxygen diffuses from the alveoli into the blood capillaries. Carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood capillaries into the alveoli
What is natural selection
The process by which organisms that are better adapted to their enviorment, survive, breed and pass on their favourable alleles that confer a selective advantage
Identify the hormones that are released in reponse to changes in blood glucose levels
Insulin is released when blood glucose levels are too high
Glucagon is released when blood glucose levels are too low
