Charismatic Leadership - Both Mao and Castro used their speeches to mobilize masses for their cause in order to maintain power
Mao
- Encouraging mass participation in political activities such as the Mass Line and the Red Guards,
- Red guards - August 1966, Mao rallied and urged students at Tsinghua university to bombard the headquarters and attack the 4 olds. They eventually formed a paramilitary social group called the Red Guards, who were instrumental in their role in the cultural revolution (1966-1976).
- Mao rallied to mobilize millions of people, particularly the youth, to become active participants in the revolution, promoting loyalty to Mao and his ideology.
Castro
- in 1961- Cuban literacy campaign. aimed to eradicate illiteracy in Cuba by mobilizing volunteers, including students and teachers, to teach reading and writing to those who were illiterate. Castro had speeches to encourage people to take part and fight against illiteracy. - the literacy rate in cuba was 98% today
The success of the literacy campaign made it so that Castro was very popular, if it were not for the participation of volunteers due to his speeches, that may not have been the case.
