•she’s dead (cant do anything)
•would upset her to see him so upset(even before her death worrying about him instead)
-generous & kind
-worrying about others rather than her own impending death

- carousels dont go anywhere •neither does our conversation it just goes round and round
- the death highlights how meaningless the small talk is
- carousels are fun & happy which provided a contrast for his grief & the sadness of the poem
