membranes + layers Flashcards
serous membrane
lines cavities with no openings to outside made of simple squamous epithelium and loose connective
parietal pleura
type of serous membrane- lining of the thorax
parietal peritoneum
type of serous membrane- lining of abdomen
visceral pleura
type of serous membrane- covers organs within thorax
visceral peritonium
type of serous membrane- cover organs within abdomen
mucous membrane
line cavities and tubes with openings to the outside consists of epithelium + loose connective tissue
synovial membrane
inner linings of joint cavities (synovial joints) with cells that secrete fluid into joint cavity (synovial fluid) lubricates joints
cutaneous membrane
skin
epidermis
protects against water loss, mechanical injury, and chemicals. Protects against UV radiation and consists of stratified squamous epithelial
stratum basale
deepest cells of epithelium
keratinocytes
older cells pushed upward made by keratin and are dead
stratum corneum
forms the outermost layer of the skin
dermis
composed of fibrous connective, epthelial, smooth muscle, nervous tissue, and blood. Separated from epidermis by a basement membrane
subcutaneous layer (Hypodermis)
below the dermis that binds the skin to underlying organs. Consists of loose connective and adipose tissue, and collagen and elastic fibers are continuous with dermis
stratum spinosum
after stratum basale and before stratum granulosum that are multiple layers of cubiodal cells
