Membranes Flashcards

1
Q

Cell membrane

A

Made of a phosphoplipid bilayer,it’s polarity allows material in and out making it selectively permeable.

Q

Phosphate groups are polar because…

A

-4 electronegative O atoms
-One atom is prone to ionize

Q

Fatty acid tails

A

Hydrocarbon chains are very non polar.
Saturated:- less fluid bc less gaps
Unsaturated: more fluid bc more gaps.

Q

Selectively permeable membrane

A

Allows only some substances to pass through. -> depends on the size and polarity of the substance.

Q

What is cholesterol?

A

A steroid -lipid molecule that is mostly nonpolar. In animal cells it is embedded in cell membranes to stabilize the membrane under different conditions

12
Q

What does the placement of cholesterol allow?

A

->hydrophilic OH to be exposed to water
-> Hydrocarbon rings and tail to be within the hydrophobic core of the membrane

15
Q

What are the properties of a cell membrane according to the Fluid-Mosaic model?

A

-not rigid, but flowing or fluid
-have proteins embedded through the membrane
-have empty regions

16
Q

How do large molecules polar molecules and charged molecules pass?

A

MEMBRANE PROTEINS- they act as channels or pumps. Some need ATP

17
Q

Types of membrane proteins?

A

Integral proteins- span the entire membrane and are always with the membrane.
Peripheral proteins- attached to the surface but temporarily
