Membrane Trasport Flashcards
What is Ficks law of diffusion?
Add pic
Do ions pass through the lipid bilayer
No, only small uncharged molecules pass through
What is the equilibrium potential?
It is the potential at which the electrical and chemical gradients are equal and opposite, so there is no net flow of ions.
What ions are found in cardiac muscle? What are their relative concentrations?
Add table image
What’s is the electrochemical gradient?
Difference between membrane potential and equilibrium potential.
What happy to the membrane potential if the permeability of a membrane is increased for that ion?
The membrane potential will move closer to the equilibrium potential for that ion.
How do you know what direction ions will move?
Ions will move in order to move the membrane potential to the equilibrium potential for that ion.
Membrane potentials are dependent on the ionic concentrations and the relative permiamity of ions
