Membrane structure Flashcards
Which structures make up the nucleus?
- Chromatin
- nuclear envelope
- nuclear pore
- nucleolus
difference between cytosol and cytoplasm
- Cytosol is the fluid where the other elements of cytoplasm remain suspended.
- cytoplasm includes all components that can be found inside the cell membrane(apart from nucleus). Cytoplasm contains cytosol, along with the organelles
What are the lipids in cellular membranes?
- cholesterol
- glycolipids
- phosphatidylcholine
- sphingomyelin
- phosphatidylethnolamine
- phosphatidylinositol
- phosphatidylserine
- phosphatic acid
- phosphatidylglyerol
Organelles surrounded by lipid membranes
- nucleus, mitochondria and chloroplasts
- double lipid bilayers consisting of inner and outer membranes
Types of proteins in the plasma membrane
-transmembrane (integral membrane protein that spans the entirety of the biological membrane to which it is permanently attached)
-membrane associated
-lipid linked
-protein attached
-protein channels
-peripheral protein
-surface protein
-globular/integral protein (don’t penetrate in membrane but are associated with membrane)
-alpha helix protein
LOOK AT DIAGRAM
What do proteins represent in a pharmacy context?
- they represent drug targets
- act as receptors and channels
Main lipids in cellular membrane
- phospholipid (hydrophilic head -phosphate- and hydrophobic region -fatty acid tail-)
- cholesterol (the rigid steroid region points up because it’s polar and the non-polar hydrocarbon tail is orientated in the membrane)
